You can't have Red Bull Crashed Ice without a top-notch course. We spoke with Martin Weirather, an ice production veteran of five years, who let us in on the secrets of a perfect track.
Time needed:
11 days
Ingredients needed:
7,000 cooling mats
94km long x 12cm wide
4 chillers
2.6m high x 2.4m wide x 5m long
Cooling capacity 1,500KW
300,000 litres of water
2 fire extinguishers
Bunsen burners
Step 1:
Before you start the ice production, you need the framework 'skeleton'.
Step 2:
You place cooling ceilings on the framework.
Step 3:
Plug in the four chillers to the cooling ceilings.
Step 4:
Lay the mats onto the framework, then pour the 300,000 litres of water onto them without forgetting any area. The water on the cooling surface then freezes.
Step 5:
Now follows the fine-tuning of the surface with fire extinguishers and Bunsen burners, and the product is finished.
The result:
2,200 square metres of ice with a width of 5m and 300 cubic metres of ice.
