Joan enjoyed a decade of impressive results in top competitions such as the Spanish Enduro Championships and the Rally Baja Aragón before turning his attention to the Dakar.
Joan’s Dakar debut coincided with the arrival of the desert classic in South America. Joan achieved the main goal of every Dakar debutant as he completed the circuit and arrived safely back in Buenos Aires. He was back in Argentina a year later and built on his already impressive Enduro CV with a 10th-place finish at the 2010 Dakar.
Then came the call from fellow Catalan Marc Coma for Joan to join his team as a support rider. The Catalans combined to bring home Marc’s third Dakar triumph in last year’s race.
Joan is back in 2012 providing back-up to Marc Coma and hoping for a repeat of last year’s result. Joan’s commitment to physical preparation as well as his obvious skills in the saddle make him the perfect companion for Coma.
Fast Fact: Despite Joan being a loyal member of Coma’s crew he also provided support for Cyril Despres at the 2011 Rally dos Sertões. Joan support on this occasion helped Cyril to win on his first appearance at the challenging Brazilian race.
Best quote: “I was pleased with how I handled the pressure of working with Marc last year. I’m naturally a calm person because I’m always confident I have done everything possible to prepare for each race. This year I’ve done more physical training than ever, so I’m ready to help Marc to win his second consecutive Dakar. The 2012 route features lots of desert – this is a worry for some other riders but it suits me perfectly.” Joan comments on his coping mechanism
