Canadian Keri Muir had to overcome several fears but successfully defended her title in the women's league of Red Bull Crashed Ice in Quebec.
25-year old Kerri Muir was born and raised in Alberta, Canada but recently relocated to one of the most culturally rich cities in America, Boston, MA, where she lives with her new husband, Pat. After recently receiving all her immigration paperwork, this former arts student works as a nanny, but has taken on an unusual hobby; Red Bull Crashed Ice.
Where did you first hear about Red Bull Crashed Ice?
It was last year when I saw an advert on TV, with the message that women can enter too. Then I just thought, 'Give it a try.'
Do you have any ice hockey experience?
Yes, I grew up with the sport. I played regularly during my time at university. I also did lots of snowboarding.
How did you prepare for the event?
I was not prepared! How could I be?! We don't have any tracks nearby. I was just skating a few times.
How was your experience of Red Bull Crashed Ice?
I just thought, 'Oh my God, it's steep!' I was really nervous and I tried to concentrate the best I could. The ice track was incredibly fast which makes me even happier that I won. I do not know how I did it, but I don't care about that!
Which skills do you think ensure you arrive safely at the finish line?
You first of all must be very brave on the skates. This is incredibly important. And then you have to know how to shift your weight. Especially in Quebec – there are so many sharp curves. I was nervous all the time and tried not to lose my balance. You should have no fear at all. Although I was nervous, I was not afraid to skate down the ice track.
