Steffi Laier overcame her last-minute nerves to become the Women’s World Champion after dominating the Dutch Moto X in Lierop.
The German led the first race but a mistake late on allowed 15-year old Chiara Fontanesi to steal first place and the series debutant held on for the win.

Laier started race two in dominant form, comfortably building a lead until she got bogged down in the sand. The resulting crash cost her 11 seconds, but she rejoined in third place, fought back and went on to win by a huge 19 seconds
“I really wanted to win the last race,” Steffi said. “Yesterday wasn’t so good because I made some mistakes. Today I also made a bad mistake in the middle of the race but I was able to come back and win. So it’s a great weekend for me and I am very happy.”
The result means the Red Bull KTM rider has tied up both the riders’ and manufacturers’ championships with one moto to go. Even if there was a sense of inevitability about her title after her closest rival, 2008 champion Livia Lancelot, dropped out halfway through the season due to injury, the records now show she is the only person to have held both the FIM Women’s World Cup and the new FIM Women’s World Championship.
