Mount St Elias scooped the honours at the recent 10th-anniversary X-Dance Action Sports Film Festival in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA.
The epic film, shot on location on Mount St Elias in Alaska and directed by Gerald Salmina, charts freeskier Axel Naglich and his companions’ attempt at the longest-ever ski descent, a total of 15mi (24km) and 18,000ft (5.5km) from the summit of the mountain to Icy Bay at its foot, with all the attendant risks of avalanche and beset by changeable weather conditions.
Mount St Elias grabbed the main Best Film award, as well as the top honour in the Adventure category, and there was also good news for wakeboarding superstar Parks Bonifay, whose life story on film – The Parks Bonifay Documentary – won Best Biography.
Both Parks and Axel were in attendance at X-Dance, where the world’s action sports filmmakers and other movers and shakers in the industry have been getting together for the last decade to celebrate the best releases of the past year and to discuss new innovations and techniques in action sports moviemaking.
