Red Bull Dolomitenmann 2008 Marcel Lämmerhirt

We're always being warned that the value of investments can go up or down, but let us introduce some values for an extreme sporting event where the athletes go up and down for their own special reward…

23...

Lienz, Austria, welcomes athletes to the Red Bull Dolomitenmann – or ‘Dolomite Man’ in English – for the 23rd time on September 11. As the name suggests, the action takes place in the Dolomite mountains, and it’s one of the toughest relay races on the planet.

4 x 110...

One hundred and ten teams, 440 participants in all, will compete across four disciplines – mountain-running, paragliding, kayaking and mountain-biking.

50...

A distance of 50km might not sound like a lot for four athletes to cover, but let’s elaborate a little more. The runners leave the town square in Lienz and run upwards a staggering 1,700m into the Dolomites. At an altitude of over 2,400m, they hand over to the paragliders, who rush 200m downhill to the take-off area. These guys have the best views of the mountains as they sail through the air and make their first landing. Another 500m run later, and they make their last take-off on the second leg to Leisach, where they hand over to the kayakers…

1,300...
The kayakers have to know what they’re about as they negotiate a tight 1,000m slalom course along the rapids of the Drau river. Then they transfer to the River Isel for a shorter run to the final changeover. The mountain bikers then have to brave the tree roots, rocks and other bikers for a final 12km leg with a 1,300m drop in altitude (so that’s pretty steep!) to the finish.

3,000...

That’s about 3km in altitude up and down over the four disciplines, all taken at breakneck speed as the teams battle it out for the Red Bull Dolomitenmann title. Excuse us, we just need to catch our breath for a minute…

4...

Phew! Believe it or not, this doesn’t take a week, there are no stops for sleep or food, and in fact it doesn’t even take a day… it’s all over in just four hours.

7,500...

Naturally, much pride and honour is at stake. But that’s not all. The winning team win a compensatory €7,500 (about US$9,600) for their efforts, a cool €1,875 each or €2.50 a metre overall (altitude appears to be better value for the organisers than buying curtain material or carpet). If you just make it elsewhere in the top five, you get your just rewards, too – €3,700 for second, €1,900 for third, €1,100 for fourth and €800 for fifth place.
