Mountain bike stunt rider and YouTube phenomenon Danny MacAskill has been nominated in the Action Sportsperson of the Year category of the prestigious Laureus World Sports Awards 2010.

The Scottish trial biking sensation is named among fellow Red Bull athlete Mick Fanning and other surfers Stephanie Gilmore and Greg Long, plus skateboarder Chris Cole and windsurfer Antoine Albeau.

The awards, which honour sporting achievement during each calendar year, are universally regarded as the top awards on the international sporting calendar. Nominees for 2010 include Roger Federer, Lionel Messi, Jenson Button and Usain Bolt.

The winners will be decided by a vote from the Laureus World Sports Academy, which is made up of 46 of the greatest sportsmen and sportswomen of modern times and the names will be unveiled during a televised awards ceremony staged in Abu Dhabi on March 10.

'I  was just doing what I love – riding my bike and a bit of filming' – Danny MacAskill

Danny was naturally delighted at his nomination: "It's crazy being nominated for the Laureus Awards,” he said. “I mean there are many other amazing athletes that won the biggest competitions in their sport and I was just doing what I love – riding my bike and a bit of filming. I am also looking forward to visit Abu Dhabi, a place I would have never thought to visit.”

According to Laureus, Danny’s nomination was due to his ‘spectacular stunt video seen by 350,000 on YouTube in 40 hours’. The clip was viewed over 15 million times since then.
