Name: Martin Tomczyk
Nationality: German
Date of birth: December 7, 1981
Debut (DTM): 2001
Best season(s): 2011 (DTM Champion)
ROC record: Debuts in 2011

Having made his debut as a teenager, and the youngest driver to ever line up in DTM, Martin Tomczyk qualified on the front row just three races into his rookie DTM season. Though it took a while before the results really started to come in – he won his first race at Catalunya in 2006 – Tomczyk stuck with Audi in DTM through the leaner times, and in his 11th season in the series, ironically in a year-old car for Team Phoenix Audi rather than Abt Sportsline for whom he drove for 10 years, he has grabbed three victories, two second places and three thirds to take his maiden championship title. Looking for fresh challenges, Martin will defend his title in the new BMW, as the marque enter the series for 2012. He followed that by winning 50,000 euros for the Wings for Life Foundation and Swiss Red Cross when he and his partner Christine Surer won a German game show.

Fast facts:

  • Martin loves pranks, but the joke was on him during DTM’s visit to Istanbul Park in 2005, when his mechanics changed his window decals to Turkish flags and his name to ‘Tömözyk’.
  • Martin’s father Hermann is an ex-driver still heavily involved in motorsport as the honorary president of DMSB, the governing body of German motorsports, and serving on FIA committees.
  • Not content with driving a full-size touring car, Martin has been known to tinker with radio-controlled DTM cars (and boats too) in his spare time.

Best quote:
“I ride at a maximum of 80 kilometres an hour, at this speed it’s the best way to enjoy everything around me.”
No, not when he’s in DTM, but when Martin’s out on the open road on his Harley-Davidson motorbike!
