KTM’s Maximilian Nagl won the first moto of the Catalunya Grand Prix weekend, but enjoyed different fortunes in the second race.
Nagl was quick out of the gates and virtually untouchable in the first moto, but heavy rain from the previous day had made certain areas of the Bellpuig track soggy and unpredicatble, and it was this that cost Nagl a double victory as he crashed out late ijn the second race from the lead. Despite the eventual ninth-placed finish, he still did enough to finish third overall and retain second in the standings.
“I’m really disappointed with the second heat because, like last week in Portugal, the first one was so easy for me,” Nagl commented. “Overall I’m happy to be on the podium and to get the points, but for sure I’m disappointed with the second heat. I need to work on that and make it better in the future.”
'I want to improve my training this week so I can try to take the victory in the USA' – Tony Cairoli
Nagl’s KTM team-mate Tony Cairoli had a first moto to forget, though he did fight his way to an eventual third place in the second to secure fourth on the day in Spain and keep his lead over Nagl atop the MX1 standings.
“It was a tough weekend. This is not my favourite track,” said the Italian afterwards. “I made a stupid mistake in the first moto and I lost the chance to win the GP… and afterwards, the bike was a bit broken and I couldn’t ride perfectly. I caught the guy in front of me, but it was hard to pass and I only finished sixth.
“I wanted to make some good points in the second moto, but I didn’t have a good start. I was eighth or ninth and managed to get back to third, which was a good result. For sure, I want to improve my training this week so I can try to take the victory in the USA. There, I want to have fun on the bike!”
