With San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium getting bombarded by rain for most of Friday and Saturday leading up to round five of the AMA Supercross series, many expected a chaotic mud race would stir things up in the championship points standings. For the third week in a row, however, the Dirt Wurx crew did an outstanding job of preserving the soil, and Honda Red Bull Racing’s Davi Millsaps reaped the benefits, riding off to the most impressive win of his Supercross career.
Team-mates Cole Seely and Wil Hahn also had great nights, piloting their Red Bull-backed CRF250Rs to second and third-place podium finishes in the ultra-competitive Lites class.
In Supercross heat number one, Millsaps jumped out to a solid top-five start before charging his way up to the third spot, easily qualifying for the main event. Supercross heat number two was Andrew Short’s turn to battle the elements, and like Millsaps, he took third early on and cruised in for a relatively easy trip to the night’s main event.
The downpour subsided just as the gate dropped on the start of the final, and the Honda duo went straight to the front, rounding lap number one in second and third, respectively.
Millsaps took the lead on lap three, and Short made a pass for second two laps later. The two Honda Red Bull riders began pulling away from the pack with just a few laps to go in the 20-lap main, but disaster struck for Shorty, when he went down hard and was unable to finish the race.
Up front, however, Millsaps remained smooth, consistent and in control en route to his first win since 2008.
“It’s been an amazing night for me,” Millsaps said with a huge smile. “I couldn’t have done it without my team. Everyone at Honda Red Bull Racing has been working really hard, so this feels great for all of us!”

In the Lites class, Hahn started off the evening with an impressive win in heat number one, and teammate Seely also qualified out of the heat with a conservative seventh. In the main, Seely and Hahn both got out to great starts, rounding lap one in the fourth and sixth spots, respectively.
In lap number six, Hahn continued to chase Seely as the two riders charged up into the third and fourth spots. Banging bars all the way to the finish, Seely hit the checkers in second just a bike length in front of Hahn.
The AMA Supercross series heads back through Anaheim next weekend for round six.
