German long-distance runner Sabrina Mockenhaupt celebrated victory in the Cologne marathon on Sunday by dancing a jig and drinking a cold beer.
The Cologne marathon is one of Mockenhaupt’s favourite events of the year and she won the famous event in 2007. But this year's race followed hot on the heels of the world championship and the German said the decision to compete was a tough one.
On Sunday (October 4), the 28-year-old crossed the finishing line in a time of 2hrs 30:12 nearly eight minutes ahead of Kenyans Rose Nyangacha and Prisca Kiprono.
Although she wasn’t able to break Angelina Kanana’s course record of 2:27:27h from 1997, Mocki celebrated with a little jig with marathon director Harald Rösch and then enjoying a tall glass of Kölsch beer in the evening.
It was a rare release for the runner, who admitted she felt like quitting after 10km. “I thought about giving up after only 10 km. It was very tough, she said. “I knew that it would be risky to compete only six weeks after the World Championship, but participating in Cologne is tradition for me.
“[It was] a bit of a pity not being able to break the course record. But even after all, this win is a nice way of finishing my season.”
