Since 2004 Aaron Hadlow has always had the same New Year’s resolution: to win the PKRA title. Up to now the five-time World Champion has strictly stuck to it, and this year the 20-year-old Brit isn’t planning to do anything different. Aaron Hadlow in an off-season interview.
Your fifth WC title made you one of the most outstanding athletes in 2008. Which athlete did you particularly admire last year?
Cristiano Ronaldo, because he played amazing football; Lewis Hamilton, as he proved himself under pressure to be one of the best F1 drivers; and also Kelly Slater, who took home his ninth World Championship title. I can relate to that a little as I can understand how much effort goes into keeping a title.
As a water sports athlete, what’s do you enjoy most about winter?
[Laughs]. That I get to go to the summer in Cape Town to relax, kite, see my family and have fun with friends.
Please tell us something about yourself that your fans haven’t known up to now.
I had a chance to go to a well known football academy when I was young but steered towards other opportunities when I got into the beach life.
Not least due to your performance, you’re constantly getting compliments. What was the nicest one to date?
Hmm … I just find it great to have younger kids asking for autographs and pictures. When I was small I always had my idols, and to be in this position now is cool.
What does a unique athlete like you dream of the most?
My goals and possibilities, whether it’s to win a championship, create or land a new trick in a sport or something generally in my life. Then I try to achieve it.
And what was the craziest thing you’ve ever done?
Having jumped the biggest bungee jump backwards, gone out kiting in 50 knots and kitelooped 15-18 meters high.
