For any athlete, there are extreme highs and lows on the path to success which shape their outlook and approach to their sport. For freeskiing Frenchman Richard Permin, taking part in the 2011 Red Bull Linecatcher backcountry event this week, there have definitely been some philosophical moments, which he shares with redbull.com
“When you ride with your friends it is the perfect motivation to push yourself”
Best day: Friends and freedom
"I was in Austria a couple years ago for the big mountain pro. It snowed 1 metre of fresh powder for the last day of the contest, which was then cancelled. We got to ride for fun in the trees all day. We just had the most perfect day and I was with my friends, jumping every cliff, every pillow and we didn’t stop skiing until the end of the day. I think when you ride with your friends it is the perfect motivation to push yourself."
Worst day: Near miss
One of my really bad times was last season in Tulsequah, British Columbia. I saw Kaj Zacrisson and Sverre Lilequist riding the same face at the same time and when they arrived at the middle of the face they both got taken in a big avalanche. They were both OK but standing there watching that avalanche with some friends inside was really scary. That was supposed to be a mellow run but at the end I understood that when you are in the mountains every run can be dangerous.
