England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff sees no reason why he cannot be back batting early in the New Year as he continues his recovery from knee surgery.

The 32-year-old Lancastrian, who went under the surgeon’s knife in the summer after helping England win back the Ashes, has revealed on his official blog that he will resume netting next month.

However, he does not expect to be bowling “for a good few weeks yet” as he follows a programme devised by surgeon Andy Williams.

Flintoff, who has started cycling after spending a lot of time in the swimming pool, said: "I'm just really looking forward to starting cricket exercises again, which I hope to start early in the New Year.

"As long as I don't have any setbacks, I should be able to start batting against a bowling machine. I won't be doing anything daft and I will have to ease into it again.

"It will be good just to start playing some form of cricket again after all this time and it will be great to start hitting balls again. When all you do is go to the gym every day, you can almost forget that you're a cricketer."

After retiring from Test cricket, Flintoff is concentrating on the limited overs international scene. He will be hoping to be fit in time to play in England’s first one-day action of 2010 in Bangladesh where the three-match series starts on February 28.
