Red Bull Crashed Ice World Champion Martin Niefnecker has remained in Canada, revelling in his first experience of the western hemisphere.

We caught up with him to discuss his victory in Quebec City on Saturday and his first impressions of Canada.

His friends have given him the nickname 'Keule' which means weapon. The dangerous 20-year old, who won the previous race in Munich to set him on the way to the world title, finished in second place in Quebec, just behind Kyle Croxall.

What were your first impressions of Canada?
It’s exactly how I thought it would be. It’s big and beautiful. I like Quebec. But the other cities aren’t that different to other cities which I’ve already seen. The people here are so welcoming. And I couldn’t have imagined that people here in Canada were so crazy about Red Bull Crashed Ice. It’s insane!

What was the biggest difference that you found?
I found out very quickly that the beer is much better in Germany!

What did you eat in Canada?
Most of the time we ate fast food, like burgers and fries. For breakfast, we had bacon and eggs. It’s a matter of getting used to it. But I am looking forward to eating the roast pork made by my lovely mum when I get home.

How was your experience on the track in Quebec?
The track was the most challenging I’ve ever seen. It was much better than in Munich. The difference in height was huge and it was much longer in total. Some parts were steeper which made it very fast. It was a successful event for the audience and the athletes.

What was your goal for Canada?
Being the winner in Munich I had a good chance of victory. My goal was to go back with the world championship but I have to say that the competitors were really good, much better than in Munich.

Did you expect your victory?
I dreamt about the victory but can still not believe that I am the World Champion of Red Bull Crashed Ice. I am so glad to have won.

Which skills helped you win the title?
I always had the victory in my mind. I am so ambitious and I just followed my goal. I did not care about the three other racers. I just wanted to come first.

Have you ever been scared of hurting yourself?
No, I am never anxious. I just have respect for this sport. If you're not careful then it can be very dangerous.

Do you have any idols?
I don’t have any idols in Ice Cross Downhill. I try to go my own way, but I also try to develop myself against others. There are athletes with a lot of different skills.

Will you be competing next year?

If nothing happens to me, I will be there for sure to defend my world title.
