Mark Webber admitted he didn’t have the pace to contend for major points at the European Grand Prix but insisted he will come back fighting in Spa at next weekend’s race in Belgium.
Webber endured a tough weekend but after only managing to qualifying ninth managed to haul him up the order after the race start, passing title rival Jenson Button early on after the Brawn GP driver cut a chicane.
But in the middle stint of the race, Button fought back and in the second round of stops just brushed past Webber to steal seventh. The Australian was then ruled out of the points places as BMWs Robert Kubica too stole past as the drivers took on fresh tyres and fuel.
“No gains for us today, which is the first time in a long time,” said a disappointed Webber afterwards. “The long and short of it was that I wasn’t quick enough today – it was a tough race. I’ve been struggling all weekend and I think I got the result I deserved, which was no points, unfortunately.
“We were a little bit unlucky around the pit stops with Lewis (Hamilton) coming back out in front, but that’s the way it goes. The pit stops weren’t great, as I might have been a bit long on positioning – so not the best day for us. But, we will dust ourselves down and move on to Spa.”
With race winner Rubens Barrichello grabbing the full 10 points, Mark now drops to third in the driver’s title standings on 51.5 points, 20 behind Button. Barrichello claims second with 54 points, while non-finishing Sebastian Vettel drops to fourth on 47 points.
