Wiggolly Dantas overcame the wind and the rain – and Bobby Martinez – to book his place in the Round of 24 as some big names came a cropper on day four of the Coldwater Classic.

In contrast to the previous day’s conditions, the surfers were 'greeted' by a freezing on-shore wind and a wild, wind-swept sea, but Brazilian Dantas secured a safe passage as the remaining eight heats of round three were wrapped up.

Dantas hit some good waves, and, although a score of 13.00 saw him finish second in his heat, behind Brandon Jackson, it was enough for the 20-year-old star to join Jordy Smith in the next round.

Bobby Martinez was a high-profile casualty of a keenly-fought heat, with the world number three finishing fourth behind Jackson, Dantas and Dayyan Neve.

Cory Lopez also exited the competition in a bad day for the American competitors.

With 24 surfers now remaining the scene is set for a gripping finals weekend, especially as conditions are expected to improve. Winds are forecast to go offshore, with Lighthouse Beach the likely location for Saturday and Sunday.
