…than Thomas Öhler – on a bike: on August 8 the 26-year-old trial biker set a new bike high jump world record in Kaprun, Austria. The Austrian improved the old record by 15 centimeters and cleared a height of three meters.
On August 8 at 10:17 p.m. local time, Austrian trial biker Thomas Öhler set a new bike high jump world record during the Bike Infection 2009 in Kaprun. On Salzburger Platz at the heart of the Austrian village in front of about 800 spectators, the 26-year-old improved the standing world record of 2.85 meters, correcting the top mark to a full three meters.
During the last few training sessions before the Bike Infection 2009, the multiple Austrian mountain bike trial national champion and European and World Champion focused on this one perfect kicker and was rewarded with an entry in the Guinness Book of Records. Up to this point, Öhler’s personal record had been 2.4 meters; until it is verified by the Guinness Book of Records, the world record remains unofficial.
‘The Idea of setting a new high jump record has been going round and round in my head for some time now,’ Öhler said. ‘The guidelines for a world record attempt are very strictly adhered to according to the Guinness Book of Records: a kicker no longer than 50 centimeters standing at a maximum distance of one meter from the wall. Without a doubt, the most difficult thing about the whole thing was the 2.9-meter wall. Riding towards it at high speed made me feel a little queasy, but the crowd did well to distract me from that,’ the new world record holder said with a broad smile.
