Petter Northug Jr sealed this season’s FIS Cross-Country overall title today with yet another win in the 15km handicap race at the World Cup finals in Falun, Sweden.

The maths already looked good after last week’s victory in Norway in the 50km race, which had put the Distance category title beyond any of his rivals, but Northug made sure of the overall crown with a first-place finish in the 20km distance race yesterday and then another in today’s race, which sees him end the season on 1,621 points, a massive 600 ahead of Czech skier Lukas Bauer in second position. Marcus Hellner finished another 36 back on 985 points overall.

'I am glad I won the Crystal Globe… because last year I was edged out in the last race' – Petter Northug Jr

“I really enjoyed the race today. Usually I have to sprint for victory, but today I could ski relaxed and control the race, and enjoy the race,” Northug commented after the 15km handicap. “There were tough conditions today, but I had good skis.

“I am glad I won the Crystal Globe even more, because last year I was edged out in the last race, so the feeling is great. My family supported me a lot, and [this is] how to pay it back to them.”
