LFW 2010 Alistair Guy

The opening Friday is always a strange day during London Fashion Week. The tone for the next seven days is yet to be set and on this occasion there was tension in the air in the courtyard of Somerset House.

The mood has been sobered by the death of Alexander McQueen. As one of the world's top creative and avant-garde designers, he will be sorely missed. A wall of the BFC tent has been dedicated to his memory with the opportunity to write tributes. Already, the response has been overwhelming.

However fashionistas, old, new and up and coming, were certainly in no short supply and, with hot new tips such as Hakaan, David Koma and Felder Felder scattered over the schedule, the excitement was well justified.

Last season saw the BFC move home to Somerset House on the buzzing Strand and, with the added glory of LFW's 15th birthday celebrations, it was a week to remember. It will be interesting to see how this season matches up but if Friday is anything to go by we are looking at the continued success story of the event, which is crucial for fresh, established, homegrown and international designers alike.

The shows were packed, the front row accommodating LFW favourites Alexa Chung (model/TV presenter), Nicola Roberts (Girls Aloud), David Walliams (Little Britain), Jo Wood (the former Mrs Ronnie Wood), to namedrop but a few. Spotting trends among the world's most highly-esteemed fashion editors is central to any fashion week and it seems that if you buy only one thing next season make it black or leather or Breton-striped. Make your statement with geeky opticals, preferably from Prism or Cutler & Gross.

Felder Felder is always a hot ticket and this season they have chosen to share their schedule slot with fellow designers, Hannah Marshall and Jean-Pierre Braganza.

The Felder Felder audience has a different vibe by comparison to many of designers – they are younger, hipper. And the AW10 collection certainly reflected that. Lots of leather, lots of black and lots of aggression. The theme was Dracula and the Felder sisters certainly followed through with their classic toughness tinged with a gothic romanticism.
