Repsol Honda rider Dani Pedrosa suffered an injury scare as he qualified third on the grid for the British Grand Prix as MotoGP racing returns to Silverstone for the first time since 1986. Team-mate Andrea Dovizioso will start fourth.
Having clocked his fastest time on the previous lap, Pedrosa crashed at Turn 12 and had to be stretchered off the track. He was then taken to a medical centre where bruising to his left and right knees was confirmed. Precautionary X-rays will also be performed before tomorrow’s race.
Should the Spaniard be passed fit he will start on the front row with Jorge Lorenzo – who claimed his first pole of the season – and Randy de Puniet. Frenchman de Puniet looked set for his first pole since Assen in 2007 before Lorenzo clocked the fastest lap with just three minutes of qualifying remaining.
De Puniet was then unable to respond as he slipped on his final lap. The second row of the grid will be led by Dovizioso who was the fourth and final rider to get within a second of Lorenzo’s time.
Interwitten Honda’s Hiroshi Aoyama continued his consistent start to his debut season as he qualified in 12th place. Pramac’s Mika Kallio had to settle for 16th on the grid at Silverstone, finishing over three seconds off the pace.
