Dani Pedrosa has cut Jorge Lorenzo’s lead at the top of the MotoGP world championship after winning the eni Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland at the Sachsenring.
The Spaniard prevailed in a shortened 21-lap race after the original race was red flagged due to a crash that left Randy De Puniet with a broken leg. The crash also accounted for Álvaro Bautista and Aleix Espargaró – with none of the trio lining up for the second race.
'Dani had more pace than me, it was impossible to follow' – Jorge Lorenzo
Pedrosa had been in second when the red flag came out and he and Lorenzo resumed their battle when the riders re-emerged with Casey Stoner, Valentino Rossi and Andrea Dovizioso behind them. The lead was constantly swapping between the two Spaniards before Pedrosa made the defining move with 12 laps to go.
Having assumed control of the lead Pedrosa was in no mood to let it go and consistently clocked lap times in the low 1’22”s. Indeed the 24-year-old twice beat his own circuit lap record.
Behind the front two, there were several intriguing battles. The returning Rossi enjoyed a fight with Stoner for third, while Dovizioso did his best to hold off Nicky Hayden and Marco Simoncelli for fifth.
In the end Perosa came home 3.355 seconds ahead of Lorenzo, while Stoner managed to edge Rossi for third with a final corner move that denied the Italian a highly unlikely result. Dovizioso finished fifth, with Simoncelli achieving his best premier class result to date in sixth.
Pedrosa is now 47 points adrift of Lorenzo in the overall standings and the Spaniard was pleased with the result.
“Dani had more pace than me, it was impossible to follow,” said Lorenzo. “He did a splendid race and it was impossible to catch him - second place is very positive for the championship.”
