It's been a busy couple of weeks since we heard from New York Red Bulls defender Mike Petke. Find out what’s new with Mike and the Red Bulls...
When you heard from me last, I was in the middle of a bitter, no holds barred battle with my in-laws from Philadelphia. Well, I am pleased to announce that order has been restored following our 2-1 win over the Union.
The peace treaty calls for, among other things:
1. Their obligation to wear a Red Bulls jersey at least once a week around the greater Philadelphia area.
2. My obligation to cease wearing my Yankees jersey every time I visit.
3. My family and I only being subjected to cheesesteaks three times a year instead of the usual three times a week.
4. But most importantly, I have won supporting rights for my two sons. They are now 100 percent devoted sports fans with no coercion or recruitment allowed from the dark side (i.e. the in-laws).
Now, onto the team. On the train ride down to D.C. the following week for our match against United, I learned a few things:
1. Conor Chinn is the worst, yet luckiest poker player in America. “All in Chinn” is his new name.
2. Our newest signing, Brian Nielsen, is the worst poker player to come out of Scandinavia in the last quarter-of-a-century. However, what he lacks in poker skills, he more than makes up for in entertainment. It has been obvious in his short time here that once he gets adjusted and fully fit, he will help us tremendously.

Pulling up to RFK Stadium on game day, there was a confident feeling throughout the team. It was a very hot day so we knew that would play a factor. The first half was fast-paced and direct. At one point, I remember feeling like I was having an asthma attack. The only problem is that I don’t even have asthma. We started the second half more composed and settled the game down to our tempo.
Once Salou Ibrahim scored the first goal, I knew we had the game won. All it took was a beautiful header from Juan Pablo Angel to seal the deal. It was a 2-0 win in a place that New York hasn’t won in five years. It was extra special to salute the devoted Red Bulls supporters who travelled down I-95 to help us.
Next up was San Jose. I won’t speak too much of that match because it was one of those “get it out of your mind” games. We were down to 10 men less than 15 minutes into the match and although we defended well as a team for the next 45 minutes, the odds were against us. Live and learn, and enjoy the game this weekend.
