Seven times WRC world champion Sébastien Loeb took to the streets of Buenos Aires for a show run ahead of the Argentina Rally. To the delight of his fans, the Frenchman took on his Citroen team-mate Sébastien Ogier in a street race around the city centre.
Ahead of the upcoming Argentina Rally and before getting down to serious business in the countryside of Cordoba, WRC champ Sébastien Loeb took to the street of Buenos Aires on Saturday afternoon to race his DS3 rally car under the shadow of the iconic Obelisco monument as part of the Citroën Road Show.
To raise the stakes, the world's fastest Frenchman and his co-driver Daniel Elena challenged their team-mates Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia to join in on the fun.
Before racing along Avenidas 9 de Juilo, De Mayo and Perón, Loeb explained what he had in store for the onlookers.
“Whenever you land in Argentina you can immediately feel the passion the Argentines have for rallying," He said. "We are always very warmly welcomed and it has become one of my favourite places to race.”
Once the street race fun was over, however, it was back to the business of collecting more WRC points for the four-time Argentina Rally winner: “This rally always throws up some very interesting special legs," says Loeb. "It can get quite slippery and there’s always plenty of variation. The thing that really makes the rally stand out for me is the beautiful scenery, some of the places we see are really out of this world.
A big fan of the country, Loeb says he intends to visit one day with his wife Séverine but openly admits there is another motive for his frequent returns to Argentina: "I love eating steak and, believe me, in Argentine you never go hungry. The portions are huge and I always like to treat myself when I’m here.”
Ahead of the next big race, Sébastien is on track to claim his eighth consecutive WRC crown. With five races of the 2011 season completed, Sébastien leads the championship by seven points ahead of second-place rival Mikko Hirvonen.
“I do not have specific expectations outside the competition in the rally," he says. "We are in favor here especially of the competition in Cordova, in that always we have many spectators, a pretty climate and a good atmosphere. I hope that everything passes as well as always.”
