A bumper crowd can expect thrills and spills aplenty on Saturday if Friday's Elimination Round is anything to go by, as the most accomplished ice cross downhill athletes competed for a place in the main event.

With the ice cutting up and large pools of water developing on the track, keeping their feet proved beyond many of the athletes who suffered a series of bruising encounters with the track hoardings.

The elimination round ahead of Saturday’s Red Bull Crashed Ice World Championship 2011 race was a battle that separated the good from the great.

Not even six-time Olympic medal winner Rintje Ritsma was strong enough to make the cut. Ritsma, who is also a six-time world speedskating champion, celebrated his debut in ice cross downhill but was knocked out in the Elimination Round.

“It was one of the most extreme things I’ve ever done,“ Ritsma said. “It was really nice to compete in this. I think it would be a good sport for the Olympics.“ Click here for the full interview...
