António Félix da Costa put in another solid performance for Arden Caterham in Race 1 of the Renault 3.5 series weekend at the Hungaroring to take a lonely 4th. The Race was won by Robin Frijns (NED - Fortec Motorsports) and he now extends his lead in the series to 16 points over Jules Bianchi (FRA - Tech 1 Racing) who finished 3rd.
It was a hard fought qualifying ending with a 3rd pole for Robin Frijns became the third driver this year to claim that many after Kevin Magnussen and Jules Bianchi, who qualified 2nd and 3rd respectively. Red Bull Junior Félix da Costa qualified 6th.
Frijns made a great start in the sunshine and led into turn 1 ahead of Magnussen, Bianchi, Arthur Pic and Felix da Costa. There was no stopping Frijns but Magnussen did his best and chased him away from the rest of the field. Bianchi could not match their pace and had a lovely race in 3rd.
Frenchman Pic soon came under pressure from Felix da Costa and if the 21 year old Portuguese had been able to get past the Dams driver quickly he might have chased Bianchi. As it was the difficulty in passing at the Hungaroring did not allow it and it was not until 8 of the 30 laps had been run that FdC could make his attack pay and by then Bianchi was over 6 seconds ahead.
Felix da Costa pressed on and did close the gap, putting in an impressive run of laps but was still 2.4 seconds behind at the flag. "I was unlucky in qualifying and just missed out on the front row. In the race I had a good start, immediately making it past Sørensen and then past Pic as well. I was then also faster than the drivers ahead of me, but I was not quite able to close the gap. The pace however was all right, and now I'm in the top 5 for the 3rd consecutive time already!"
