Carlos Sainz jr. scored an excellent 3rd in the last Cooper Tires British F3 Series race of the weekend at Rockingham and salvaged something after disasters in the 2 earlier races. From 4th place on the grid Sainz immediately jumped to 3rd by overtaking Carlin team mate and points leader Jazeman Jaafar (MAS) from the start and chased pole man Jack Harvey (UK) and Alex Lynn (UK).
Sainz was chased by Jafaar but the young Spaniard had Saturday's winner under control and was able to slowly pull away. Up at the front Harvey soon had a significant lead over his closest pursuers Lynn and Sainz, with Carlos very soon putting pressure on the Lynn. Harvey was the only driver in the field setting lap times significantly below one minute and 19 seconds.
At the midway point of the race Harvey continued to hold a clear lead, ahead of Lynn and Sainz, who had slipped one and a half seconds behind 2nd place. Jafaar was trailing Carlos by just under 3 seconds.
Over the final laps nothing changed amongst the front runners. Harvey took a convincing lights-to-flag win with an advantage of 19 seconds ahead of Lynn and Sainz. Though the results means that Sainz has reduced Jaafar's points lead he has lost 2nd place in the table to Harvey. 1st Jaafar 137 points; 2nd Harvey 124; 3rd Sainz 117
Sainz: "What a pity because I needlessly lost a lot of points here in Rockingham. At least there was some sense of achievement in the end, at least there were no incidents or penalties. It was one of those weekends, in race 2 Ilyas hit me from the back when I was 8th, in race 3 got a good start and just cruise to the checkered flag with no chance of overtaking. Not the best weekend but this podium kind of compensates a bit. It just seemed that everything has been against us a bit and now I just have to try to make up the ground I lost at Brands Hatch."
The next 3 races of the 2012 Cooper Tires British F3 Series will be run at Brands Hatch in two weeks, June 23rd-24th.
