Carlos Sainz Jr. had a disastrous start to his Cooper Tires British Formula 3 International Series at weekend at Snetterton when the 17 year old Spaniard was hit from behind on the first lap of round 21 on Saturday. The rain shortened race was won by Jack Harvey (GBR - Carlin Dallara-VW) ahead of Felix Serralles (PUR - Fortec Dallara-Mercedes) and Harvey regained the points lead from Serralles.
The first lap drama was created when late-braking National class pole man Pedro Pablo Calbimonte came together with the Carlin cars of Pietro Fantin and Sainz at the Montreal hairpin. Sainz and Calbimonte were eliminated from the race in the collision, and Fantin limped to the pits for a lengthy stop. Harry Tincknell (GBR - Carlin Dallara-VW) picked up a puncture in the incident also.
Sainz Jr. "I can't say much, except that someone hit me from behind – and hence the race was over. That's a real shame, especially as everybody knows how much I enjoy driving in the rain…!"
Provisional championship standings: 1st Harvey 229 points; 2nd Serralles 227; 3rd Jaafar 208; 4th Sainz 176; 5th Lynn 168; 6th Tincknell 145
