Red Bull Junior Team: Euro F3 Nürburgring Race 1 - Sainz 7th
Carlos Sainz Jr. put in a well judged performance to take 7th in Race 1 of the F3 Euro Series Nürburgring weekend. The 17 year old Spaniard lined his Carlin VW up on the grid in 7th place and though he made a strong attack at the 1st corner and attempted to steal 6th he was repelled and spent much of the rest of the race defending his position from Alexander Sims (GBR - Threebond with T-Sport). Clear winner of the race was Daniel Juncadella (ESP - Prema Powerteam - Dallara F312 Mercedes).
Right from the start pole man Juncadella had the advantage and was never troubled through 29 sunny laps of the shorter version of the Nürburgring Grand Prix track. There was very little overtaking at all. The 1st corner saw Jazeman Jaafar (MAS – Carlin - VW) take 5th from Raffaele Marciello (ITA - Prema Powerteam – Mercedes) and though the Italian then put pressure on the Malaysian for the rest of the race he withstood it well to hold position at the flag.
Sainz had thoughts of going after 6th but he could not concentrate on it as he had to keep a watching eye on his mirrors with Sims looking to make a move. Several times the British driver attacked and Sainz was obviously under pressure, smoke puffs from the tyres showing he was braking on the limit but he defended well.
At least twice Sims tried too hard and almost lost it completely, the final time was on lap 23, he tried to go outside under braking for turn 1 then switched to the inside on the exit and again outside at the next corner, Sainz defended and Sims blew it, almost lost control and ended the lap 2.6 seconds adrift from the Spaniard.
Sims was again able to close gradually on Sainz in the remaining laps but his challenge ran out of time. Sainz was never quite close enough to make a run at Marciello and he crossed the line just over a second behind the Italian and a similar distance ahead of Sims.
Juncadella won by 5.4 seconds from Sven Müller (GER - Prema Powerteam – Mercedes) who was a further 2.4 seconds clear of Pascal Wehrlein (GER - Mücke Motorsport – Mercedes). Juncadella therefore extends his points lead over Marciello in the championship chase.
