Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0, Race 1, Motorland, Aragon, Spain., Hat-trick for Daniil! Third win in the third race. Daniil Kvyat (RUS, Team Koiranen) continued his series of season wins into the Eurocup, pole position, fastest lap of the race and a lights-to-flag victory!
Red Bull Junior Daniil Kvyat remains in a league of his own in Formula Renault 2.0 at the moment. The young Russian won the third race in a row, following two wins in the Alps series he also took victory in the first Eurocup race of 2012, with pole position and leading from lights-to-flag.
Race day in Aragon and the young drivers in the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 started their new season by tradition at Motorland Aragon, Spain.
Three Red Bull Juniors entered the championship this year, with Russia's Daniil Kvyat in his third year in this series being regarded as one of the main favourites for the title.
In the Formula Renault 2.0 Alps championship Kvyat was able, as a warm-up for the Eurocup, to win both races in Monza.
The other two Red Bulls in this series, Alex Albon (ENG) and Stefan Wackerbauer (GER), still have to go through the learning process as rookies.
Qualifying for Race 1 was run at 9.00 a.m. Saturday, with only 15 minutes or six laps at the drivers' disposal.
In a dramatic quarter of an hour Kvyat eventually clinched the first Eurocup pole of the year, while the two team-mates were unable to qualify near the front of the field: Wackerbauer started from row nine, Albon from row 15.
As for the race, Kvyat won the start and immediately pulled away from his pursuers. De Vries and Vandoorne were running 2nd and 3rd.
Wackerbauer and Albon improved enormously over the course of the race, starting an impressive charge through the field.
Wackerbauer soon moved up from P18 to P11; Albon improved from P30 to 21st in the course of just 5 laps.
Up at the front Kvyat controlled both the race and his pursuers, the gap wavered back and forth between 1 and 2 seconds.
The safety car had to take to the track on lap 7 following an accident at the bottom end of the field, admittedly rather late. The drivers bunched up once again, the advantage of Daniil was gone.
It then started to rain heavily 3 minutes before the end of the race, and the race was red-flagged and stopped ahead of time.
Victory thus went to Daniil Kvyat, ahead of de Vries and Vandoorne.
Wackerbauer finished in 11th place, Albon was classified in P21.
Kvyat: "An optimal start to the Eurocup, the strongest Formula Renault championship. The team gave me a perfect car, and with it I was able to achieve a perfect day – pole, fastest lap and maiden win! Things can go on like this as early as tomorrow."
Wackerbauer: "We completely modified the car compared to yesterday. I wanted more grip in the front, especially under braking. Things were much better in the race. Then, I was able to overtake no less than 4, 5 cars on the very 1st lap. Unfortunately the safety car then came out, and my race to catch up was over."
Albon: "I received a special permit by the FIA, because of my young age – that was welcome. Things went very well in the race as well, I was able to make up several positions, the setup changes paid off."
”During the safety car the car in front slammed his brakes and so I had no where to go. I avoided him but because I had to turn so sharply I spun. It was partly my fault, but it is racing, and situations like this is where you gain experience!” concluded the young Briton.
