Callan O’Keeffe, the youngest of the Red Bull Juniors, had great speed but poor luck in the last rehearsal for the all important Formula BMW Talent Cup Final. The 4th event this year was held at the Hungaroring over 3 days, September 14th to 16th, the drivers had the chance to experience all facets of a full race weekend, with free practice sessions, timed practice, super-pole and three races.
Our 16 year old South African explained how it went. “In the first race I ran onto the dirty line after the start and lost several positions. After that I was able to fight my way back up to 3rd place, with the fastest lap of the race. In the second simulated race I was delayed by the safety car and had to settle for 2nd. In the final race in Hungary I started from 9th and quickly improved to 4th with several fastest laps. Then my fuel pump packed up and I had to retire from the race, as the fastest driver on the track – and that was very frustrating. But I think that I’m very well prepared going into the grand finale – and with very good chances at top results!”
The BMW Talent Cup is not a championship but a series of training camps that help young drivers make the transition from karts to open wheel cars and the results for the year all hinge on the Grand Final to be help at Oschersleben, from September 14th to 16th as part of the DTM weekend. The winner of the three races at Oschersleben will receive funding from BMW for a season in a higher level racing series in 2013.
