Red Bull Junior Team: Renault 2.0 Nurburgring Race 1 - Kvyat 5th

Daniil Kvyat (RUS-Koiranen) scored some useful points with 5th place in the Race 1 of the weekend in Renault 2.0 at the Nürburgring but it was a disappointing day for the Red Bull Juniors with Alex Albon (THA-Epic) in with a good chance of some points until being spun out from behind and finishing 24th. Stefan Wackerbauer (GER-Koiranen) could not make the start due to an engine misfire. The race was won by Stoffel Vandoorne of Belgium.

Leading the series coming to the German round and in great form Kvyat expected more from race 5 in the series. The Russian was not happy with 6th in qualifying while Albon secured his best grid position so far with a 5th row start just in front of Wackerbauer.

Vandoorne started the 25-minute-plus-1-lap race from pole and led from Nato and Chatin with Kvyat in 6th and Albon 11th. The pack stayed close for a long time on the Nürburgring Grand Prix circuit, after 3 laps the top 15 cars were running within 10 seconds. Up front Vandoorne was unable to pull away.

Kvyat was running in the pack, just behind Silva and just ahead of Rowland. Albon was on course for a top-ten result when clipped from behind. He regained the track 33rd and at the tail end of the field.

The field remained close but the track provided few overtaking possibilities so Kvyat, already a 3-time winner this season, had no chance for a 4th win but did gain a place for 5th

Vandoorne celebrated a lights-to-flag win ahead of Nato and Chatin. Albon had worked his way back up to 23rd at the flag but was fittingly disappointed.

Albon: "It's a shame about a very promising race. I found my way around the track very well in the faster group during qualifying, in the race things initially were going perfectly as well, then I got spun into nowhere. Very disappointing!"
