The world's greatest gamers are getting together this week to discover who is the king of Halo: Reach and Starcraft II: Wings Of Liberty...
No longer the last refuge of bedroom-bound geeks, gaming is now the province of the bold and the beautiful and everybody is getting involved. That’s what makes the Santa Monica finals of Red Bull LAN such an exciting prospect.
The event, which runs from September 29 to October 2, will see the world’s best gaming teams battling it out for digital supremacy in both Halo: Reach (the hugely popular Xbox first-person shooter) and Starcraft II: Wings Of Liberty (the critically acclaimed real-time strategy PC game – with aliens). Overseeing the whole event will be presenters Danish "DMAQ" Maqbool and Sean "DAY9" Plott, who will give pros and newbies alike the lowdown on how the final progresses when the event streams live on RedBullUSA.com.
Facing off for the title of Red Bull LAN legends in the Halo: Reach camp will be Team Turning Point (headed up by Dave “Walshy” Walsh – Red Bull pro gamer and godfather of the Halo franchise), Team Status Quo (which includes the likes of Red Bull’s Ian “Enable” Wyatt, Clete “Assault” LoRusso, Michael “Flamesword” Chaves and Aaron “Ace” Elam) and Team Instinct (with 2010 US Champ Justin “Pistola” Deese).
Taking to the skies to grab glory in Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty will be an international line-up including the likes of America’s Steven “Destiny” Bonnell, Korea’s Choi Ji Sung “Bomber”, Russia’s Aleksey “White-rA” Krupnuk and Germany’s Giacomo “Socke” Thus.
As gaming becomes a bona fide sport in its own right, for the first time Red Bull LAN will be discovering what it is that makes a great gamer when they run the players through baseline physiological testing. The sports performance team, led by Dr. Walshe, will build up data throughout the competition to evaluate and identify the optimum make-up of a gamer.
