Sweden's ethereal electro-pop outfit Little Dragon are causing an ever-widening ripple in the dance, indie and pop worlds with a sound that's as blissed-out and subtle as it is groovesome and bottom-shaking. The band are currently touring the world and Barbie Brady was lucky enough to make their acquaintance at Detroit’s Movement festival.
This four-piece hail from that Scandinavian hotbed of pop, Gothenburg. They're also signed to the reliably ace Peacefrog Records alongside fellow countryman Jose Gonzalez. Even without hearing Little Dragon's pillow-soft dance music, these two things alone are enough to garner interest in the band, which is comprised of Swedish-Japanese singer and percussionist Yukimi Nagano and her friends from high school: Erik Bodin (drums), Fredrik Källgren Wallin (bass) and Håkan Wirenstrand (keyboards).
With a sound that wormed its way stealthily into mind and feet, Little Dragon dominated the Red Bull Music Academy stage at Movement with a performance that made the punters think twice about Swedish stereotypes. In fact, forget about ABBA and Ace of Base for a moment. Little Dragon are just one of a clutch of fantastic Swedish bands emerging at the moment and with their delicate, ethereal vocals riding a flighty magic carpet of rhythms and pulses, these four can write late-night electro-pop songs with the best of them.
