Red Bull Salzburg cruised into the next round of the Champions League qualifiers after beating Omonia Nicosia 4-1 at home, to win the tie 5-2 on aggregate.
Having been pegged back by a last-gasp Tresor Lomana LuaLua penalty in Cyprus last week, Salzburg got off to the perfect start at home when Dusan Svento – a late replacement for the injured Andreas Ulmer – put them in front after 21 minutes. Franz Schiemer then gave the hosts a commanding lead with two goals before the break.
“Our left-back Andreas Ulmer injured himself during the warm-up, so Dusan Svento took his place,” said The Bulls coach Huub Stevens. “Svento did very well and he scored the first goal a la Giovanni van Bronckhorst. After 1-0 we played better soccer, which led to two goals from Franz Schiemer.”
A dominant display from the home side was capped when new signing Joaquin Boghossian scored his first goal for the club to make it 4-0 on the night. And despite a late consolation for the visitors from Hernan Rengifo, Stevens was happy with the result.

“Today we played a strong, good footballing team and won 4-1,” the coach added. “Our new striker, Boghossian must of course adapt to the team and the team to him. In football you do not have time, but he gets better every day I see him.”
The Bulls will now play one of FC Basel, Anderlecht, FC Copenhagen, Hapoel Tel-Aviv or Sparta Prague in the fourth round. "I do not have a preference," said Stevens, "but it would be nice if we did not do a very great distance to go."
