Gee Atherton, fresh from a unique downhill MTB challenge through a Brazilian favela for Red Bull Desafio no Morro, answers our questions.

So, the Desafio no Morro – it was pretty memorable…
“The track was incredible – one of the fastest street races I have ever ridden. It was sketchy riding, with dogs and people wandering across the track. Every run, there was a new challenge, and because of the speed it meant you really had to stay focused. But the most impressive thing was the atmosphere. The crowds were awesome and were so excitable – it was a real party atmosphere. I would love to have a street race like this at home, but the main thing about this race is how unique it is.”

I guess events like this help in your quest to increase the profile of mountain biking?
“Yes – mountain biking is growing and growing, and wherever you go in the world, people want to see the riding and see just what can be done on bikes. It’s a big goal of mine to help the sport grow and reach new people.”

How did you feel, arriving in such a different environment?
“I was nervous coming into this. I’d heard a lot about the favela, but once we walked the course and saw how friendly everyone was and how pleased they were, I changed my mind. It was awesome to see how much support the riders had.”

What’s the plan now?
“I’ll stay for a few days in Rio to party and relax, now the season has finished – it will be awesome, for sure.”

How satisfied are you with the way the season’s gone?
“Coming off the back of a good season last year, it was always going to be difficult to top it, especialy with a winter off with injury. I’ve struggled to get the race run up to speed in a lot of the races this year, but I’ve been happy enough on the whole.”

What are your goals for 2010?
“I really need to focus on having a consistent season next year to work towards winning the overall championship. I’ll have to alter my training slightly and come up with some fresh techniques to work on.”

What else motivates you? Any favourite songs, for example?
“‘Danger Zone’ [by Kenny Loggins] from the Top Gun movie soundtrack – it’s the best song ever.”

Finally – you’re in a dangerous sport, fraught with risks. Does anything scare you?
“I’m scared of spiders!”
