Dani Pedrosa racing around Indianopolis

Championship leader Valentino Rossi snatched pole position for Sunday's San Marino Grand Prix from under the nose of a flying Dani Pedrosa before casting doubt on his future with Yamaha.

In the dying minutes of Saturday’s qualifying session at Misano it looked as if Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa had pole in the bag. But the Italian legend gambled by taking on fresh rubber and set a blistering time of 1:34.338 to leave Pedrosa second.

Rossi’s team-mate Jorge Lorenzo, currently second in the overall standings, was third. The Spaniard also had cause to celebrate after Yamaha confirmed he will be racing for them again next season.

Rossi seemed less happy with the decision, questioning the policy of having two strong MotoGP riders in one team.

He then added further fuel to the debate over his long-term future saying he had turned down the chance to race for Ferrari at the Italian Grand Prix next week.
