EC Red Bull Salzburg's defence of ice hockey's European Trophy suffered another setback with an undeserved 3-2 defeat to Malmo Redhawks.
Following Wednesday's 4-5 reverse to Frölunda Indians, the Red Bulls had to take another defeat on the chin.
Marco Pewal's goal gave Salzburg a 1-0 lead at the end of the first period but goalie Reinhard Divis had his hands full at the start and could not prevent Morten Green's powerplay goal in the 27th minute.
Ramzi Abid restored the Red Bulls' lead barely a minute later and the team should have increased their advantage further on a number of occasions, with Brent Aubin, in particular, missing a glaring opportunity.
Almost inevitably, they were caught on the counter attack, Carl Soderberg levelling the scores in the 52nd minute. The game went into overtime and the Redhawks capitalised when Robin Nilsson-Alvarez scored in the 63rd minute.
Goalscorer Pewal said: "We were the better team but that counts for nothing if you aren't able to convert opportunities into goals and you make mistakes in defence. Failings like these are quickly punished and unfortunately we had to take it on the chin again today."
Having won only two of their first five games, and sitting in fifth, one place outside the all-important top four, EC Red Bull Salzburg are in need of a victory in their next game against Swedish champions HV71 Jönköping on Saturday.
