Red Bull Salzburg have been handed a tough test after they were drawn alongside Italian giants Juventus and big-spending English side Manchester City in the Europa League group stages.

The Bulls’ Champions League dreams were ended by Hapoel Tel Aviv last Tuesday as they could only manage a 1-1 draw in Israel after losing 3-2 at the Red Bull Arena. However, Salzburg fans can still look forward to some glamour ties as they were drawn against two of European football’s biggest sides in Group A – where they will also face Polish side Lech Poznan.

Turin-based Juventus endured a difficult campaign last season, finishing a lowly seventh in Serie A and missing out on the Champions League in the process. However, they have a new manager in Luigi Del Neri and have spent heavily during the summer – Marco Motta, Simone Pepe, Miloš Krasić and Alberto Aquilani all signing for the Bianconeri.

Juve’s spending pales into insignificance, however, when up against that of Man City. The English club – who booked their place in the group stage with a 3-0 aggregate win over Romanian side FC Timisoara – have spent over €146m on six players, including World Cup-winner David Silva, Yaya Toure and James Milner.

Group A is completed by Lech Poznan. The Polish side made sure of their place in the group stages with a 1-0 aggregate win over Ukrainian side Dnipro – winning 1-0 in the Ukraine.
