Beneath acres of glass and surrounded by classic aircraft and racing cars, dining at Hangar-7’s Ikarus restaurant in Salzburg is a pretty unusual eating experience – but where else in the world can you have a really rather different meal out?

It’s not often that you can say you’ve seen an aeroplane that once belonged to a former dictator now restored in flying condition in a rather special hangar, then been served food from an award-winning Swedish chef in that hangar’s restaurant – well, at Hangar-7's Ikarus, you can… but where else might you go to test your sense of adventure as well as your tastebuds? We found five more.

Titanic Theatre Restaurant, Melbourne, Australia
‘The only place where your night is guaranteed to be a disaster!’ boasts this unique eaterie. As well as enjoying what those on the fated SS Titanic would have done before the iceberg mishap in April 1912, patrons pay either for meals in ‘steerage’ or ‘first class’, and must dress accordingly, with black tie and evening dress required in the expensive seats. Despite some dramatic noises and flashes of light, no one drowns, however, with the Carpathia rescuing everyone in time for a night on the tiles in ‘New York’.

Dinner in the Sky, worldwide
Got 500 sqm and permission to use it from the landowner? Then Events in the Sky can help create a special meal out. With their bespoke craning equipment and team of pros, 22 guests and three staff, typically a waiter, chef and entertainer, can be suspended 50m up in the air for a truly unique al fresco eating experience with a view anywhere in the world. Best avoided if you’re hosting the World Acrophobia Convention…

Sounds of Silence, Australian outback
It starts as an almost unrivalled sunset view of one of the world’s great heritage sites, Uluru (formerly known as Ayers Rock), but more importantly, you get some really nice canapés and fizzy wine, too. After a meal that includes emu and crocodile from the barbeque, a specialist stargazer gives you a lowdown of some of the constellations visible in the heavens. Not exactly the silence advertised, perhaps, but at least you won’t be able to hear any of the long line of whining tourists trailing up the rock on their gap year.

Taste Restaurant, Bratislava, Slovakia
Another experience of eating up on high can be found in the ‘UFO’ concept atop the Slovakian capital’s landmark New Bridge over the Danube, the seventh-largest single-pylon cable-stay bridge in the world. Even if you don’t spot any aliens from 85m up, with a panoramic view of Bratislava and 100km beyond, you should have plenty to look at. And at €30 for a three-course, hour-long ‘Mediterrasian’ meal, you won’t be bankrupt at the end of it.

Zauo, Komaki, Japan
If you’re a fisherman, no doubt you’ll have had the pleasure of eating your own catch, even if it was a tiddler and took just a few seconds to eat. At Zauo, however, you could be in for a treat. Order your fishing rod on arrival, then head to the restaurant’s large pool and try your luck. Not only does fish from the pool cost a lot less than ordering ready-caught specimens, you’ll also be able to eat your food with a smug look on your face, even if it isn’t a ‘whopper’…
