The title favourites emerged unscathed as 64 athletes from a total of 21 nations won through Friday's Elimination Round to make a date with the World Championship final in the historic old town of Quebec.

Following the single timed runs in the Shoot-Out, Friday evening's action featured four-man competition for the first time as the Quebec City fans got a sneak preview of Saturday's main event.

The elite Canadian ice cross downhill athletes once again demonstrated their skating prowess, with Adam Horst, the fastest athlete in the International Shoot-Out earlier in the day, one of many to look out for.

World Championship leader and title favourite Arttu Pihlainen, who won the Quebec City race in 2008 and 2009, acknowledged the seemingly endless supply of Canadian talent: ”Every year Canada manages to put top rookies on the starting line and some of them are extremely dangerous.”

The 100,000-strong expected for Saturday’s race are already focusing on a tense World Championship battle. Home crowd favourite Kyle Croxall will try to knock Pihlainen off the top of the table in the final race. The Finn holds a 300-point lead in the championship after victories in Valkenburg and Moscow.

But there is a long list of potential candidates, 63 to be precise, who would all like to upset the favourite and win Saturday’s race on a track packed with jumps, 360-degree turns and one steep descent to the Place de Paris.
