Review - Red Bull Art of Can Dubai 2008

The Red Bull Art of Can exhibition premiere in Dubai was held on December 4 in the Mall of Emirates and featured 122 works of art including sculptures, paintings, photographs and mechanical and audio-visual compositions.

The creations were by Emirati, Gulf, Arab and foreign artists residing in the UAE and abroad who participated in Red Bull Art of Can that was launched in the UAE last May under the headline ‘Inspiration comes in a can’ and in reply to the question ‘What does a Red Bull can inspire in you?’.

The jury toured the exhibition two hours before opening the doors to the guests. They assessed all the works according to creativity, theme and final presentation. The first prize went to Michael Turda from the Philippines for his ‘I am legend painting’. ‘I never expected to win,’ said Michael, who finished his artwork in three days only. ‘Especially after I saw the other contestants’ amazing works … I am genuinely stunned.’ The second prize was awarded to Rodel Noja, Philippines, for his sculpture ‘Meet the Myths’. And the third prize was granted to Jerry Maninang, also from the Philippines, for the distinguished talent he showed in his work of art entitled ‘Energizing lifestyle’.

The jury was comprised of Ramesh Shukla, known photographer and artist; Nayla Al Khaja, the first Emirati woman film producer and director; Azza Al-Qubaisi, the UAE’s leading jewelry designer; Haneef Raisani, the first Emirati DJ/producer talent; Aggelos Antonopoulous, artist and assistant professor at the Athens School of Fine Arts, and Christopher Lord, Arts and Culture editor at Time Out Dubai magazine. About the jury’s point of view, Mrs Nayla Al Khaja said: ‘Firstly I would like to congratulate the winners, knowing that our mission was not easy at all. The exhibited works of art are highly artistic and reflect great talent and serious creativity.’
