World number one Jordy Smith headed the list of high-profile casualties as the Coldwater Classic in South Africa produced a series of shocks.

Smith, who confirmed his position at the top of men’s surfing with a victory in the Billabong Pro at Jeffreys Bay earlier this month, was the favourite going into the tournament on the Cape Peninsula.

However the 22-year-old got no further than the Round of 32 on Wednesday as he finished third in heat eight, losing out to fellow South Africans Greg Emslie and Matthew Bromley.

Smith was not the only one to fall foul of the wild and woolly conditions at Kommetjie.

Among the other departures was Coldwater Classic Tasmania winner Stuart Kennedy who, prior to this event, was sitting in first place on the CWC Series rankings.

Kennedy finished third in his heat behind Nicholas Godfrey (ZAF) and Indar Perez (EUK).

Also knocked out in the Round of 64 were last year’s semi-finalist Jarrad Howse and South African star Casey Grant.
