Austrian snowboarding whiz Benjamin Karl gets off to the best possible start in the opener of the PGS World Cup...

Karl was out of the blocks quicker than a greyhound at the season's first PGS World Cup meet in Telluride, Colorado. The 26-year-old snowboarder beat his fellow Austrian (and current team-mate) Andreas Prommeger in the final of the giant parallel to claim a 13th World Cup victory.

Karl, a silver-medallist in the same event at the 2010 Winter Olympics, said afterwards: "It was a tough final. I really had to fight as I heard him coming".

Another Austrian, Julia Dujmovits, triumphed in the ladies' event.

The LG Snowboard FIS World Cup continues this weekend Telluride with the season’s first snowboard cross. The next parallel event takes place in Carezza, Italy.
