Red Bull Cliff Diving returns next week with the second stop on the 2010 World Series – it’s Yucatán, Mexico, and one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
The awe-inspiring setting of Chichen Itza, world-renowned for its ancient pyramids, maybe famous for something else after June 6! The ancient Maya civilisation attached sacred powers to the nearby Cenote Ik Kil which will host the cliff diving competition.
The 60m-wide well is as deep as it is wide but one man hoping to make an impact almost as big as the asteroid believed to have created the chasm is a Mexican wildcard, Fito Gutierrez.
His is a country with a long tradition of cliff diving - Enrique Apac Rios was only 13 when he conquered Acapulco’s La Quebrada in 1934 - so Gutierrez will be treading in some well-worn footsteps after he was granted entry into the second round to compete alongside established names such as Orlando Duque and Steve Black.
Once selected for the Olympic Games in Barcelona, the 40-year-old wants to impress the five international judges and hopefully win a ticket to the 2011 series.
Brit Gary Hunt impressed the judges the most in La Rochelle, France, earlier this month as the 25-year-old’s aerial arsenal blew away the competition.
After the chilly opening on the French coast, much warmer conditions will greet the intrepid divers as they seek to develop new manouevres and redefine the sport in the land which helped make it famous.
