James Stewart has undergone surgery to repair a broken scaphoid in his right wrist and as a consequence missed out on this weekend’s AMA Supercross in San Francisco.
The defending world champion has been struggling with the injury since crashing in the second race of the season in Phoenix and his return to the race track is as yet unknown.
Incredibly, despite the injury, Bubba still managed a podium finish in the third race of the 2010 campaign in Anaheim, but he continued to experience severe pain in the wrist.
Although previous x-rays had not shown a break, an MRI scan performed on Thursday and reviewed by medical experts on Friday, revealed the bone was broken. Surgery was therefore performed immediately and was successful.
As a result of the operation, Stewart could not compete in San Francisco this weekend and in his absence, Ryan Villopoto took first place, with overall championship leader Ryan Dungey finishing fourth.
Team San Manuel Yamaha manager Larry Brooks said: “James is a true champion. The fact that he rode as competitively as he did – making the podium at Anaheim with a broken wrist – is testimony to that.”
Of a potential return date for Stewart, Brooks said: “He’s anxious to heal and get back on the race track as soon as possible.”
