Top female surfers Sofia Mulanovich, Sally Fitzgibbons, Maya Gabeira and junior surfer Nadja de Col are in good shape for their upcoming competitions after completing their stay at the Red Bull Surfing Girls Only camp.
The girls took part in five days of intensive training in from May 27 – June 1, with each surfer working on specific aspects of technique and nutrition on the beaches of Lima, Peru. The women also worked on aerials, continuing what they had learnt earlier in the year at Red Bull Project Air.
'After this week I feel more confident with my surfing and I feel more prepared for my next WCT event' – Sofia
Video analysis played an important role at the camp, as each girl’s performance in the water was filmed by one of their coaches. They were then shown the footage and what they needed to work on – both on the beach and back at their beach house base.
According to Dan Ross, head coach of the Red Bull female team, “instant video analysis is key. The surfers get instant feedback of what they are doing while standing right on the sand, with the wetsuit still on. This allows them to go right back into the sea and try out what we discussed.”
Picking up where they left off in Australia, the girls also practiced aerials with coach Shane Beschen, using an elastic bed and skateboard to simulate conditions in the sea. They also worked on their paddling technique, picking up waves and their diet, while they also took part in a mock tournament where extra points were awarded for different moves.
The camp was an excellent experience for de Col as she got to learn from professional coaches and some of the best female surfers in the world. While Gabeira gained confidence in the water that will help her big wave surfing.

For Mulanovich and Fitzgibbons the camp could pay more immediate dividends as they compete in the Movistar Peru Classic this weekend. “After this week I feel more confident with my surfing and I feel more prepared for my next WCT that will be at home in Peru,” said Sofia.
Fitzgibbons was also full of praise for the training camp. “This camp has been hard but also a lot of fun, it’s cool to be only among girls some times, we had the chance to improve our surfing using the video analysis, which I think was the key in this camp.”
