The only thing keeping Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team’s Marvin Musquin from claiming the MX2 world championship is his team-mate Rui Goncalves.
The riders claimed overall first and second spot in the Braun Grand Prix of The Netherlands last weekend with championship leader Musquin edging ahead of his Portuguese stablemate. Moto X legend and Red Bull KTM team boss Stefan Everts was delighted to see the title race come down to a straight battle between his riders in Brazil. "It's a good clean sporting battle between you two guys in MX2," he told his riders after the event. "The gap is getting smaller and now it's up to you two to decide who is going to win the title!"
In Lierop, Musquin crashed heavily in pre-qualifying and Goncalves went on to claim pole. That was just the start as each rider traded fastest laps, victories, crashes and injuries through the weeekend.
In race one, Musquin took the lead and was out in front for the whole race until he crashed again. The Portuguese gratefully accepted the victory while Musquin managed to recover and pass Joel Roelants to take second place.
Musquin hit back in race two, taking the lead as Goncalves crashed twice and struggled to the finish with an injured right shoulder. “I had a bad start in the second race but I pushed hard to widen the gap after I got past Rui,” said the Frenchman. “I had a very good feeling for the rest of the race and I felt safer when there was a gap between us. The bike is awesome and it's not bad to win the GP!"
"This was a good weekend for me but I still lost quite a few points to Rui and well, the championship is not over until it's over".
"The title fight is not over yet,” agreed Goncalves. “The gap is not big and now we're going to Brazil, which is like a home race for me because the language is Portuguese. I guess I will get some good support from the crowd and it will be cool to be there."
