At just 15 and facing her first Major test as a pro in this weekend’s US Women’s Open, Alexis Thompson has the world of women’s golf at her feet. We caught up with the LPGA’s newest star.

When did you discover you could play golf?
When I was around seven years old and won my first national tournament, which was the Doral Publix in Miami, Florida. It was in the Sevens and Under division…

Did having two brothers who also played help your game, and were you all really competitive with one another?
Yes, I was always the youngest and they were both better than me, so it made me strive to improve and beat them. We always play together when we are home and compete to see who is King – or Queen – of the Castle!

Which female golfers do you most admire?
Nancy Lopez and Annika Sörenstam. It’s hard to beat the careers they had.

Would you want to play on the men’s tour as Michelle Wie has done?
No, I want to focus on the LPGA and continue to pursue my dreams and goals out there.

Where’s your favourite course?
The Dinah Shore course, where the Kraft Nabisco LPGA Major is held, in Mission Hills, California, or Essex Country Club in Massachusetts, which hosts the Curtis Cup [the women’s amateur team championship between the USA and Great Britain & Ireland].

'I wanted to end my amateur career with the Curtis Cup, and I'm so happy I got to experience that'

Have you ever shot a hole-in-one?
Yes, I've had two hole-in ones. One was at age seven and the other at age 11!

What would you be doing if you weren’t a golfer?
I would probably be playing soccer or some other fast-paced sport.

After winning the Curtis Cup, you immediately turned pro – was the timing a happy coincidence?
The timing was great, I wanted to end my amateur career with the Curtis Cup, and I'm so happy I got to experience that and represent my country.

So, you’re playing in the US Women’s Open again this year…
Yes, it’s at Oakmont in Pittsburgh [in the US state of Pennsylvania] where the men had the US Open a few years ago. My brother, Nicholas, played in the US Amateur there also, which is kind of cool.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time?
I see myself as being one of the top LPGA players – if not the best – in the world…
