Mick Fanning grabbed his second Rip Curl Pro Search crown today, beating fellow Australian Bede Durbidge to the title in the final in Peniche, Portugal.

Despite smaller waves than those he’d tackled yesterday to reach the final, Mick kept his head to score 12.67 to Durbidge’s 9.87, not only winning the Pro Search title for the first time since 2005 but also increasing his lead at the top of the ASP Tour standings with one Tour event, in Hawaii in December, remaining.

“Yesterday was one of the best days of competition I’ve ever seen, and we all showed up today and had to adjust our frame of mind to deal with the [change] in size and quality,” Fanning said after his win.

“The Search lived up to its name – we searched everywhere,” Fanning added. “We surfed four different waves for the event, and even yesterday, I wanted to go and surf down at the wall, but we ran here, and it ended up being one of the best days of the year.”

The inaugural women’s event now begins in fine weather in Portugal. You can keep up with all the happenings on the Rip Curl Pro Search 2009 website.
